Storm Mode Switch

Introduction

On Grid battery-based systems are normally configured to make the best utilisation of solar generated electricity before using stored solar energy from the battery, as the focus is on using little or zero power from the electricity grid. This meaning that batteries can be in a discharged state after the sun goes down. However, if there is an impending storm that may lead to a loss of grid power, it is wise to try and fully charge your battery before the grid outage happens.

This document outlines how to configure a “Solar Hybrid Priority within the Solar Hybrid Control scheme in SP LINK. There are 8 Solar Hybrid priorities which shape the customers energy usage, where Priority #1 overrides all other priorities.

In this example we will use Solar Hybrid Priority #1 to provide battery charging from the grid, we refer to this as a Storm Switch.

All diagrams in this installation note are given for reference only. Please ensure all wiring complies with relevant safety standards and is carried out by suitably qualified personnel.

Preparation
This document needs to be read in conjunction with the SP PRO instruction manual and the SP LINK instruction manual (both found in the SP LINK Help menu).

A Solar Hybrid priority can be activated in one of 2 ways, a static date and time, or by enabling 1 of 4 Digital Inputs. This example requires the dynamic nature of a Digital Input.  A Digital Input will be enabled when a DC voltage of between 10V-60V is applied, below 10V DC the Digital Input will be disabled.

Wiring
Each SP PRO has an internal 12V 0.8A Auxiliary Power Supply on the Communications Card which is suitable for enabling the SP PRO Digital Inputs. Please ensure all devices connected to Auxiliary Power Supply do not exceed 800mA.

The schematic below demonstrates the connections for controlling a Digital Input from dry contacts on an external device. An external switch must be wired to a Digital Input on the SP PRO’s Expansion Card for activating the associated Digital Control Input (an overview is provided below):

The above diagram shows a switch providing DC Voltage to the Digital Input, this switch can be a physical switch in the home or a Smart Internet switch. Whenever the switch is closed, the Solar Hybrid Priority #1 (Storm Switch) will be active, leaving this switch ON after the grid has returned, will cause power to be continually drawn from the grid.

SP Link Configuration

New System
When configuring a new system, Storm Mode Switch should be selected in the Configuration Wizard. This will automatically configure Hybrid Priority #1 to force charge the battery from the grid.

Existing System
For an existing configuration Hybrid Priority #1 can be configured to perform the Storm Switch Function as below:

NOTE: Input 1 is selected for this example

Digital Control Activation > Activate Input > Digital Control Input 1

AC Source > Grid Input Limit > Set kW

Charger Control > Battery Charging > Charger On

Charger Override > AC Source Limit During Override > Grid Input Limit (AC Source Power*)

*You may want to select AC Source Power if you want to use that as the power limit.
